Investigation on Area of a Circle
- With your compass, make a circle with a radius of approximately 3 inches.
- Cut out your circle with a pair of scissors.
- Fold the circle in half.
- Fold it in half again.
- Fold it in half a third time.
- Fold it in half a fourth time.
- Unfold your circle.
- Cut out your 16 wedges.
- Rearrange your wedges in a row, alternating the tips up and down to form a parallelogram.
- Paste or tape your 16 wedges as a parallelogram onto a piece of paper to bring into class tomorrow.
- Do NOT show up with your 16 wedges in a baggie.
- I want them taped or glued to another piece of paper.
- Below it, i want you to answer the following:
- Is the area of your original circle the same as the area of your new parallelogram?
- DERIVE the area of a circle from the area of a parallelogram.
