Investigation on Area of a Circle

• With your compass, make a circle with a radius of approximately 3 inches.
• Cut out your circle with a pair of scissors.
• Fold the circle in half.
• Fold it in half again.
• Fold it in half a third time.
• Fold it in half a fourth time.
• Unfold your circle.
• Cut out your 16 wedges.
• Rearrange your wedges in a row, alternating the tips up and down to form a parallelogram.
• Paste or tape your 16 wedges as a parallelogram onto a piece of paper to bring into class tomorrow.
• Do NOT show up with your 16 wedges in a baggie.
• I want them taped or glued to another piece of paper.
• Below it, i want you to answer the following:
• Is the area of your original circle the same as the area of your new parallelogram?
• DERIVE the area of a circle from the area of a parallelogram.
